What Causes Furnaces to Malfunction?

Like any mechanical system, furnaces are susceptible to breakdowns. If you notice that your furnace isn’t performing as it should, it could be due to several causes. The optimal performance of your furnace is dependent on the continual operation of many parts and components within the system. If one small issue occurs, it can cause your furnace to start acting strangely, or even cause it to stop working altogether. Furnace issues can have several causes, including the following:

  • Dirty filters
  • General wear and tear
  • Slipped or frayed belt
  • Worn-out ball bearings
  • Electrical issues
  • Pilot control problems
  • Cracked heat exchanger
  • Malfunctioning thermostat
  • Broken blower motor
  • Faulty limit switch
  • Lack of maintenance

If any of the above is true of your furnace, you will likely begin to notice one or more issues occurring. Unusual noises, foul odors, restricted airflow, no heat, insufficient heat, and frequent cycling are all signs that something has gone wrong inside your furnace. Your best course of action is to reach out to our heating experts for help. We’ll quickly identify the source of the issue and explain your repair options.

Is Your Furnace Making Strange Noises?

There will always be a soft noise when a furnace runs. No furnace can run completely silent, but there are specific sounds a furnace only makes if there are serious problems within. Here are some of the problematic sounds and what they mean for your furnace:

Banging

If you hear a banging sound when the furnace starts up, it means that there is a dirty burner. When the burner is dirty, the furnace can't ignite properly. This failure to ignite right away leads to an increase in gas within the furnace. The banging is actually a mini explosion within the furnace.

Screeching

A screeching sound is typically caused by a loose piece of metal being dragged across another piece of metal. Sometimes this is an indication of the blower fan coming loose and scraping against the furnace, but it could be caused by several things.

Whistling

When a furnace is producing a whistling noise it means there is something restricting or blocking the airflow. Many times this can be as simple as needing to replace an air filter. Another cause of whistling is a closed or blocked air vent. Be sure to check your air vents for any dirt or debris.

The Damaging Effects of a Dirty Air Filter

One of the most common reasons a furnace develops problems and stops working is a clogged air filter. When an air filter is blocked, the air handler is forced to work harder to compensate for the restricted airflow. This causes your system to perform less efficiently, driving up your utility bills. Your furnace will also run with less heat output, leaving your home colder than you’d like. If your unit is a newer, more efficient model, it may shut itself down to prevent a dirty filter from causing more trouble — again, leaving you with inadequate heat.

At Service First HVAC, Inc., we can not only help you change your air filter but also repair any damage that has resulted from leaving a dirty filter in your system for too long. You can tell if it’s time to change your filter by holding it up to a light and seeing if the light still shines through. If not, the filter needs to be changed.

Today, I had my 3rd experience with Service First and their technician, Jay Krauss, and once again, I continue to be totally impressed with all facets of their business and their work. I watched Jay make every effort to save my current furnace after a leaking pipe sparked a meltdown of my current control board, but it was obvious to me that it was totally fried. I look forward to seeing him again to install the new furnace.

I am also enjoying their Spring and Fall tune-ups. They not only clean the systems, they take detailed readings of the components that help ensure your system is operating at peak performance.
